Rob Green can't believe 'wild' thing he saw Sean Longstaff do in Leeds United vs Chelsea

Sean Longstaff had an important chance to impress in Leeds United's Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Whites failed to get a first win at Stamford Bridge since 1999, and fell to the Blues after a 6-3 defeat.

Daniel Farke named eight changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Brighton on Saturday, and one of them was the inclusion of Longstaff.

The 28-year-old started in the 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest, grabbing an assist, and always looked likely to start against Xabi Alonso's side.

He partnered the trusty Ethan Ampadu in the middle of the park, though Farke may already know who his midfield two is moving forward.

Longstaff's performance has sparked conversation, and one moment in particular even left Rob Green amazed.

Longstaff is most likely going to be a rotational option once more this year, and has only played eight minutes in the Premier League.

Ao Tanaka, Ampadu and Anton Stach are all ahead of the former Newcastle man in the pecking order, as the Whites also tried, but failed to land another central defensive midfielder.

Longstaff had a good chance to put Leeds 2-0 up before the break, as Dan James' cross found its way to the former's feet, only for him to blaze over from 12 yards out.

While speaking live on Sky Sports, Green explained his thoughts on the move and how Longstaff should have hit the target at the very least.

The former England goalkeeper said: "He [Longstaff] has to hit the target; I just don't think he thought he was going to get it. I was worried James couldn't get to this touch because it's a heavy one.

"Longstaff, I'm going to be kind to him and say I thought Malo Gusto was going to get there first, because it's wild from him."

The chance accumulated an expected goal rate of 0.08, so it can be up for debate whether or not he should have scored or not.

Leeds were still looking for a win, despite heavy changes to the starting eleven.

Those who came in simply had to stake their claim, but Longstaff has given Farke little reason to consider playing him more in upcoming league action.

Tanaka has yet to put a foot wrong this season, and Longstaff's performance will only boost his chances of keeping a spot in the starting eleven.

The Japan international wasn't able to nail down a starting spot last term, but he now has a major chance to do so, at least until the winter transfer window.

He was lively when he came on and was looking to make an impact.
