Darren England suffering 'mental exhaustion' as 'serial offender' gets away with it again in Leeds vs Man United

Darren England was suffering from "mental exhaustion" in Leeds United's 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday.

That's according to former Premier League referee Keith Hackett, who questioned some of the referee's decisions in the feisty Yorkshire versus Lancashire showdown.

At one point, it looked as though a red card was inevitable at Elland Road.

However, despite four yellow cards, a couple of flashpoints and 21 fouls, England managed to keep his red card in his pocket throughout the 90 minutes.

There were opportunities where England could have dished out bigger punishments than he actually did, though.

And one of those should've seen Leeds awarded a penalty.

Harry Maguire a 'serial offender'

Hackett believes Leeds should have been awarded a penalty kick in the second half.

As Man United defended a 63rd-minute corner kick, Ethan Ampadu was dragged to the ground by Harry Maguire.

It appeared as though the ex-Leicester defender had his arm over Ampadu's shoulder and neck and he pulled him over, but England refused to respond to claims.

England's no-penalty decision was upheld by VAR, but Hackett wasn't convinced.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the former PGMOL general manager said: "Maguire, let’s face it, is a serial offender at corner kicks and will continue to use his hands and arms illegally until someone determines that a penalty kick should be awarded.

"Maguire has committed a foul challenge and England should have penalised it with a penalty kick.

"VAR, in attempt to stay low key, decides not to come in, but He should have do done to allow England the opportunity to have a replay of the incident at the monitor."

Why Keith Hackett thinks Darren England struggled in Leeds vs Man United

Hackett believes that a few wrong decisions by England could have been down to the fact that he was VAR during Liverpool's win over Brentford on Saturday.

Yehor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt were both sent off for Brentford, meaning that England had a busy game to manage at Stockley Park.

In the first half, Hackett believes that an incident where Ampadu should've been booked for a reckless challenge on Byran Mbeumo summed up England's fatigue.

"Darren England should have produced a yellow card for this clear reckless challenge," Hackett added.

"Perhaps because he was close he was unable to determine the speed of the challenge accurately.

"He was VAR on the Brentford game v Liverpool yesterday and witnessed two red cards!

"A busy weekend and in my opinion should only receive one appointment in order to fully recover.

"It’s the mental exhaustion."
