Daniel Farke handed new food for thought after Gabriel Gudmundsson's display vs Japan
Gabriel Gudmundsson was utlised as a centre-back for Sweden against Japan, something which he has never done for Leeds United.
And for good reason too.
The Sweden international was instrumental for Leeds last season, not only defensively, but also with his willingness to drive forward and contritbute in the final third.
Gudmundsson failed to get a goal or an assist in the Premier League, but his influence was demonstarted by the fact that he created 21 chances and completed 24 crosses.
For context, only 13.1 per cent of full-backs in the top flight completed more crosses than him last season.
However, his latest appearance at the World Cup may have just given Daniel Farke something to think about over the summer.
How did Gabriel Gudmundsson fare in unfamiliar role?
This was his third appearance of the World Cup, but as mentioned above, only his second-ever appearance as a centre-back throughout his career.
His last in that role was back in the 2024-25 season with Lille, where he played a full 90 minutes at centre-back.
And while Farke will have been unlikely to consider him for that role at Leeds, that may have changed after the draw with Japan
Gudmundsson completed 41 of his 45 attempted passes, showcasing his composure on the ball, while completing 100 per cent of his attempted long balls.
He made a total of eight defensive contributions, having also won all but two of his eight duels in the game.
The Swede won three fouls for his team, made three clearances and two tackles, showcasing his strengths when it comes to defending.
Quite frankly, it was a near-perfect display from the 27-year-old, especially when taking into account his unfamiliarity with playing at centre-back.
How Sweden display could have negative effect on Leeds this summer
Chelsea have already been linked with a move for Gudmundsson, having lost Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
It's clear that the reason behind the interest is his attacking nature as a left-back, but his latest cameo at centre-back will also catch their attention.
Xabi Alonso has been known for having ball-playing centre-backs at the clubs he has managed, and having someone like the Swede to fill in there if neccesary will be appealing.
As for Leeds, however, they will be well aware of the level of importance Gudmundsson has in the team, and that is likely to be reflected by their asking price and stance on an exit if the interest does go further.
