Leeds United Women fight back for battling draw with Barnsley Women but need wins

Leeds United Women had to settle for a second consecutive draw in their Easter weekend clash with Barnsley Women, which is threatening to see their season fizzle out.

After seeing so much of their league calendar disrupted since the turn of the year Simon Wood’s side could have harboured hopes of turning their multiple games in hand into a late-term flourish that would threaten Middlesbrough and Hull City at the top of the table.

But a four-game win streak has now given way to a run of just one victory in the next four, with a pair of draws most recently after they fought back to rescue a point with a 1-1 result against the side immediately above them in Barnsley.

While the Whites still have two more games to play than their most recent opponents they would surely have wanted to close the seven-point gap in Garforth on Easter Sunday (31 March).

As it was a competitive affair saw the points shared after Olivia Smart’s second-half equaliser cancelled out an opener from Louise Biggins in the first period.

Leeds United Women unable to force victory

With five outings left in the FAWNL Division One North there is still an outside chance of pushing up the table some way from the current fifth-placed standing.

But while Leeds United Women can’t be accused of giving up the challenge at this stage of the campaign the league table is starting to look like it might be destined to meander to an unremarkable conclusion and a mid-table finish without an uptick in results.

Wood will expect a comfortable victory next time out against bottom side United of Manchester as he looks to lift his team onto a run of wins to close out the season.

As three of the other four sides to have only played 17 fixtures so far are still to come in Hull, Chorley and Chester-le-Street those games are sure to have a major bearing on how much the league table might change after some clubs have finished their season.

So there is a lot still to play for but Leeds United need to build up some momentum quickly.
