Liam Delap: Leeds United enter race for Chelsea striker as exit encouraged for summer

Liam Delap has had a tough time at Chelsea with his future up in the air, a situation Leeds United are seemingly keeping an eye on.

The Whites have enjoyed a successful campaign and go into the final two games of the season with little left to play for, other than finishing as high as possible.

Daniel Farke’s side are no longer able to be relegated and have no outside chance of making European football now.

So, preparations for the summer window are likely to already be underway, as a review of the German’s squad will be undertaken to avoid another relegation scare.

Now, reports have emerged of Leeds’ transfer interest, with Liam Delap a potential target heading into the summer.

What has been said about Leeds’ interest in Liam Delap

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, Leeds have now entered the fray to sign Delap in the upcoming summer window.

The Whites face competition from the likes of Newcastle United, Everton, and Ipswich Town. Meanwhile, Strasbourg is in the mix as well due to the multi-club ownership relationship with Chelsea.

The Stamford Bridge outfit is said to be attempting to encourage Delap to seek football elsewhere, with his signing ultimately failing this season.

Phillips shares that “We’ve also heard that Chelsea have told his agents that Delap needs to look for another club this summer. The club want to sell him.”

Delap has scored just one goal in 26 Premier League appearances this season. However, he has just started 11 of those matches.

When starting up front for Ipswich in the season before, the 23-year-old netted 12 goals for the Tractor Boys.

Leeds are beginning to pick up their business, with Morita reportedly close to arriving at Elland Road.

How much would Liam Delap cost Leeds United?

In the same report, it is said that Chelsea feel confident that they would be able to bring in the same fee with which they paid for Delap.

This means the Whites would be looking to fork out around £30million for the signature of the English forward. However, Phillips shares that “there’s also talk of loan to buy deals” opening the door to a more financially viable deal.

As things stand, it would be hard to see how Delap could force Dominic Calvert-Lewin out of the number nine role, but competition breeds more success.

The Englishman has a history of scoring in the Premier League, but only when trusted to start a run of games.

Having more options to pick from would allow Leeds to avoid another relegation battle and perhaps set eyes on bigger goals next season.
