Leeds United star Ilia Gruev could be set for an emotional exit following the Whites’ pursuit of Hidemasa Morita.

Gruev’s season is over after sustaining a nasty injury that is said to keep him sidelined for the next few months.

Daniel Farke has confirmed that the Bulgarian will be back for pre-season, but by then, he could be far behind in the pecking order.

The Whites already have a well-stocked midfield with the likes of Ao Tanaka, Ethan Ampadu, and Anton Stach, but hope to add more strength in depth this summer.

Leeds have been linked with Morita, and that may not be good news for Gruev, especially after contradicting reports.

Leeds offer Hidemasa Morita a two-year deal

Leeds are said to have offered Morita a two-year contract, despite conflicting reports that suggest they are not interested in the international star.

The 31-year-old Sporting CP star has made 40 appearances for Japan’s national team in total, netting six times, and is set to feature for his country at this year’s World Cup.

Morita is very similar to Gruev in the sense that he can create chances from deep, but also control the tempo of the game, while have that midfield bite needed.

Gruev has made 26 appearances for Leeds in all competitions this season, but has still failed to establish a starting spot in the squad.

The 26-year-old has three assists in the Premier League this season, but some would suggest that he’s not quite ready for regular football at this level.

With that in mind, the potential arrival of Morita could spell the end for Gruev’s time at Elland Road this summer.

How much could Leeds get from Gruev sale?

Gruev may have only boosted his market value this season with performances in the Premier League that prove he can hold his own.

It’s unlikely that any current teams in the top flight would be after the midfielder, unless they required depth.

However, newly promoted sides or even Championship clubs may be interested in signing him in just a few months.

Gruev’s contract expires in the summer of 2027, which makes it even more sensible for the 49ers to cash in on him in the upcoming transfer window.

According to Transfermarkt, Gruev’s value is £10.3million, which most likely comes as music to the ears of many Leeds fans.
