Leeds United: Sean Longstaff’s contract examined after difficult debut campaign
Leeds United haven’t truly seen the best of Sean Longstaff since his summer move.
The 28-year-old sealed a switch from Newcastle United before the season to add to the midfield conversation at Elland Road.
There were hopes that his Premier League experience would be enough to help the Whites survive after promotion.
Daniel Farke looks to have nearly achieved that goal, but has utilised the likes of Anton Stach, Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka more regularly in midfield.
That has made life difficult for Longstaff since his Leeds move, as we now assess what we know about his contract situation in LS11.

What is Sean Longstaff’s contract situation at Leeds United?
The Englishman appeared to be a shrewd piece of business for the Yorkshire outfit when he came in over the summer.
He had played a regular role with the Magpies since breaking through into the first team back in the 2018/19 season at St James’ Park.
| Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| 2024/25 | 32 | 0 | 1 |
| 2023/24 | 46 | 8 | 2 |
| 2022/23 | 41 | 3 | 4 |
| 2021/22 | 26 | 1 | 1 |
| 2020/21 | 27 | 0 | 1 |
| 2019/20 | 29 | 2 | 2 |
| 2018/19 | 13 | 2 | 0 |
That hasn’t translated into his spell at Elland Road, as he hasn’t truly made himself a regular in the starting XI to this point.
He featured across less than 1000 minutes in the Premier League, and that certainly won’t be what he hoped for after signing a four-year deal in the summer.
That will keep his future secure in LS11 until the summer of 2029 on reported weekly wages of £80,000, equating to a yearly salary of around £4million.
Longstaff has been disappointing for Leeds, and there is every chance that he could force through a departure at the end of the season.
When could Longstaff leave Leeds?
If the Whites are to avoid relegation from the Premier League, they will likely seek to further strengthen their squad.
That may spell even more bad news for Longstaff, who has already found himself sliding down the pecking order in LS11.

He may already see his future away from Elland Road, but that would be the final straw.
There may also be a desire from Farke to keep hold of the midfielder, as his experience and voice in the dressing room will be a plus point despite his lack of minutes.
It will certainly be an interesting summer as Longstaff could leave immediately or could stick it out and fight for his place in Yorkshire.
