Pep Guardiola bows out in esteemed company as only Leeds great Don Revie can match one achievement

Pep Guardiola bows out as Manchester City boss with a number of incredible achievements to his name, but there is one that only Leeds United great Don Revie can match.

The Catalan finally confirmed on Friday that this weekend’s clash with Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium will be his last as City boss.

It brings an end to a magical 10-season spell in Manchester for Guardiola, who won 17 major trophies across that period.

Guardiola averaged 2.28 points per game as City boss across 379 Premier League games, which is the best return of any manager to have taken charge of 20-plus matches.

That is not the only stat highlighted by Opta, one of which regards a Leeds legend in Revie.

Pep Guardiola longevity highlighted by Don Revie stat

Guardiola tended to enjoy his meetings with the Whites, given Man City have won six in a row against Leeds.

But that is true of pretty much every team Guardiola has come up against over his decade at the Etihad Stadium.

City have been a consistent force, even on the odd occasion they have not finished first, having always finished in the top four under Pep.

And as pointed out by Opta’s Jonny Cooper via X: “Pep Guardiola is one of only two managers in English top-flight history to manage in 10 seasons and finish in the top four each season.

“The other? Don Revie with Leeds United between 1964-65 and 1973-74.”

It will hardly be the stat Guardiola is remembered by years from now, but it will bring back memories of some of those previous highs.

Daniel Farke predicted what was to come for Guardiola

Daniel Farke will be one of the managers most pleased to see the back of Guardiola due to the aforementioned record Leeds have against Man City.

The German also crossed paths with Guardiola during his time as Norwich City manager.

And ahead of one some meeting five years ago, Farke predicted exactly what was to come for Guardiola as he said “the football community should build statues for him”.

City announced on Friday that they will indeed be building a statue for Guardiola, as well as naming their renovated new stand after him.

Farke also hailed Guardiola “an inspiration to so many people”. This was five years, remember – only halfway through his City tenure.

As Leeds know from Revie’s tenure, however, nothing lasts forever.
