Gabriel Gudmundsson incident vs Bournemouth ‘should’ve resulted in penalty’

Gabriel Gudmundsson may consider himself to be lucky to not have given away a penalty in Leeds United’s clash against Bournemouth.

The Whites secured a 2-2, with Eli Junior Kroupi netting the opener. Wilfried Gnonto would appear off the bench to net an equaliser. Rayan would put the Cherries back in front before Sean Longstaff scored a late equaliser.

However, the state of the game could have been much different, as Bournemouth had a shout for a penalty moments before Leeds’ first goal.

With the score at 1-0 to the home side, Alex Jimenez burst towards the touchline, with Gudmundsson putting the defender off.

Despite the referee waving away appeals and VAR not getting involved, former FIFA official Keith Hackett believes it should have been a penalty in Leeds’ game against Bournemouth.

Keith Hackett reacts to Gabriel Gudmundsson penalty incident

Hacket believes that Leeds should have been penalised for Gudmundsson committing a foul on Jimenez in the 64th minute.

Gudmundsson had been left exposed in the first half, and Bournemouth looked to threaten down his side again.

Speaking on the incident, the former referee chief was furious, stating: “No I am not happy!! This was a clear push by the Leeds United player and a foul committed. This should have resulted in a penalty kick to Bournemouth.

“The upper-body foul committed by the Leeds player, leaning into his opponent with strength that resulted in his opponent going to ground. A clear penalty kick for me.”

Ultimately, it was a big decision by the officials, as the Whites would score just moments after the incident.

In the end, it seemingly did have quite the impact as Leeds equalised late on in the match as well to bring one point back to Elland Road.

Nonetheless, Gudmundsson may consider himself a lucky man to not be credited with handing the Cherries a chance to cement their lead at the time.

Premier League survival surely confirmed for Leeds now

With that draw, Leeds are now on 40 points, which should confirm their place in the Premier League next season.

The 40-point mark was the total that Daniel Farke earmarked before the season, and he has done so with four games left to play.

Now, focus will turn to the FA Cup semi-final, as the Whites seek to add yet another moment of joy to their already successful season.

While Leeds may have been fortunate to get a point against Bournemouth, the players, manager and fans won’t care too much right now.
