Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brilliant and baffling vs Man United but Leeds won’t be concerned

As the final whistle sounded, Daniel Farke was rightly mobbed by his coaching staff.

This monumental Leeds United victory against Manchester United was their first at Old Trafford since 1981 and, more crucially, moved them six points clear of the bottom three.

Relegation? No chance. Certainly not based on this performance, which was bursting at the seams with relentless running, crunching tackles, cool heads in a feral atmosphere and quality. They battered the hosts and deserved much more than a nerve-jangling finish.

This was a serious test of mettle, but they passed with flying colours. To a man, the Whites were outstanding and were worthy of the three-point haul against their fiercest rivals, which will allow them to breathe just a little bit easier. Tottenham, on the other hand, should worry.

While Leeds are still not mathematically safe from the drop, the momentum is with them. Indeed, the mood has shifted at Elland Road and for that, Farke deserves credit.

Familiar issues haunt Dominic Calvert-Lewin

This was no smash and grab. No, Leeds beat the door down, seized hold of the jewels and pulled their opponent’s pants down, all while staring them straight in the eye. It was an impressive display of confidence and bravado that defied their fragile league position.

Whatever Farke had said pre-match, it worked. In fairness, his team selection had already done the talking. The Whites went big, playing a risky game, but it paid off. They pressed high, leaving gaps behind but succeeding in penning Man United back for large swathes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put himself about in a showing both baffling and brilliant. He was involved when Leeds took the lead after only five minutes, having got a touch on Jayden Bogle’s cross to steer it in the direction of Noah Okafor, who finished with aplomb.

The frontman was a nuisance again seconds before the visitors’ second goal, pinning Lisandro Martinez. It was a lively all-round outing, albeit one missing one crucial element: an end product. That has, unfortunately, been an all-too-familiar tale for the 29-year-old.

Really, Calvert-Lewin should have given Leeds the lead even earlier. Gabriel Gudmundsson’s low ball across the turf was put on a plate for him, but he couldn’t snaffle it up, his sliding effort well saved by Senne Lammens at point-blank range.

Clearly, it still just isn’t clicking for the No 9.

There is a reason why he has scored just one goal in his past 10 Premier League appearances. Calvert-Lewin is getting in all the right positions, just as he was during the first few months of the campaign, but his finishing touch has deserted him.

Ironically, it was his purple patch back in December that arguably spared Farke from the sack. Fast forward four months, and the Whites boss will be desperate for more, especially with Leeds now agonisingly close to wrapping up their top-flight status for another season.

But while he could not add to his tally, he was treated to a warm response from the 3,000 supporters crammed into the away end at Old Trafford. It was merited after the ace busted a gut throughout the 90 minutes, helping Leeds dig in when the hosts threatened a comeback.

His impact cannot simply be measured in numbers. After all, it was his hair that Lisandro Martinez tugged, resulting in the centre-back being handed his marching orders after a VAR check. Even before that, he had got the better of the Argentine and Leny Yoro.

It is just a shame that he couldn’t etch his name on the scoresheet, but he will know he only has himself to blame. His header from Bogle’s devilish cross on 77 minutes was a sitter, but again, he could only steer it right at Lammens, who got down sharply to smother on his line.

Calvert-Lewin saved Leeds vs Man United

Oddly, Calvert-Lewin’s telling intervention actually came at the other end. With just five minutes remaining, Bruno Fernandes’ cross dropped to Casemiro at the far post. His header looked set to drop into the far corner, only for Leeds’ No 9 to heroically clear off the line.

He competed well throughout, winning four aerial duels and two on the ground, and proved a real thorn in Man United’s side as Leeds condemned their old enemy to a bitter evening.

Despite his scoring duck, Calvert-Lewin is still enjoying his best campaign in front of goal since 2020-21. His flurry before Christmas helped build the foundation from which Farke is now building, and he will have played his part if Leeds do succeed in staying up.

Thanks to this win, they’re almost there.
