Gabriel Gudmundsson speaks out on Leeds United injury as definitive return date set

Gabriel Gudmundsson has spoken out on his recent Leeds United injury blow and his chances of being fully fit for the World Cup.

The Sweden international has been superb for Leeds in his first season in West Yorkshire upon joining from Lille last summer.

Gudmundsson made 35 appearances, all but three of those in the Premier League, prior to sustaining an injury in the recent FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea.

He has since missed Leeds’ win over Burnley and draw against Tottenham as top-flight survival was secured.

Gudmundsson has now spoken out on his injury problem for the first time after being named in Sweden’s World Cup squad.

Gabriel Gudmundsson will be fully fit for World Cup

Gudmundsson was only expected to miss a game at most for Leeds, but clearly the injury was more serious than first imagined.

With Leeds now officially up for another season, Daniel Farke has zero reason to rush the defender back to action.

Gudmundsson can be forgiven for having one eye on the upcoming World Cup after Sweden sneaked into the tournament via the playoffs.

And the 27-year-old expects to be fully up to speed well in advance of the tournament beginning in a month’s time, though it is unclear if he will play in either of Leeds’ final two matches.

“It’s nothing that I can comment on,” he told Hallandsporten. “I went a little behind.

“But I have had a good dialogue with the national team management and will be fully ready when the World Cup squad gathers on May 27th.”

Leeds take on Brighton and West Ham United in their final two games, on 17 and 24 May respectively.

The injury sustained by Gudmundsson usually keeps players out for a maximum of three weeks.

Gudmundsson has ‘mixed feelings’ after World Cup call

Gudmundsson was clearly delighted at being named as part of Sweden’s squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, he revealed in the same interview that he has “mixed feelings” as he is due to become a dad for the first time over the summer and will likely miss the birth.

That is the sacrifice professional footballers have to take, though, and there is no chance Gudmundsson will be missing out on the World Cup.

From a selfish perspective, Leeds fans will simply hope he returns fully fit and ready to play his part from the off in 2026-27.
