Leeds United chief Paraag Marathe sent a message to supporters on Monday, but seemed to soft-launch a summer window of misery with his comments.

The Whites chairman came out to say thank you to fans for their support, congratulating Daniel Farke on the magnificent job he’s done to keep the club in the Premier League.

However, Marathe also mentioned how Leeds will have to be strategic with their transfer business in the summer window, admitting they cannot operate as they wish in the top flight for another two seasons.

This could scare Farke into leaving, as the German head coach has already hinted that he will depart if the club’s ambition does not match his own.

But Leeds have been predicted to earn £144.5million from the Premier League’s distributions for the season, and their published accounts suggest that Marathe needs to be careful with his words.

Leeds are set to land the 14th largest payout among Premier League clubs, earning a fraction of the £3billion distributions for the season.

The overall distributions to Premier League clubs have surpassed £2.8bn in the last three seasons, which shows the importance of how much money is still multiplying in the top flight.

Not only are the Whites set for a healthy boost in prize money this season, but last term the club saw a record-breaking turnover of £137m.

Leeds have only been progressing off the field, not to mention the £150m investment into improvements on Elland Road.

In Marathe’s message, he was almost trying to warn fans that they will struggle to compete in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Marathe said: “This summer, instead of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) will impact our transfer market approach. Our approach to the transfer market will once again be strategic and disciplined to comply with regulations while striving further to improve, and players will both arrive and depart as a result.”

Leeds already have extra £30m up their sleeve before summer sales

Leeds spent around £100m last summer while also having success in the free agent market.

The Whites also had an extra £30m up their sleeves when they tried to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen in the winter window.

They were unable to match Crystal Palace’s offer in excess of £50m, but Marathe should know that fans will be aware that the money they bid can’t have just disappeared.

Add to the fact that the Whites could raise £50m in player sales of their own with the potential departures of Joel Piroe, Dan James, and other outcasts, there will be no excuses.

Yes, Leeds aren’t in the strongest of financial positions, but Marathe can’t get away with thinking he’s able to pull the wool over the eyes of every supporter.
