Leeds United board member speaks out for first time on Daniel Farke comments – ‘We need to sit down’

Daniel Farke was right in his assessment that Leeds United have to re-evaluate their goals, board member Peter Lowy has said.

Speaking prior to the 1-0 victory over Brighton last weekend, Farke said his mission is fulfilled at Leeds, which immediately sparked questions over his future at Elland Road.

However, the German quickly clarified that his initial objectives set out when he took over at the club have been achieved.

As such, Farke was keen to point out that Leeds – who have successfully negotiated their first season back in the Premier League – must now reassess what their next targets are.

The comments about Leeds’ next objectives in the top flight were quite pointed, but it does appear as though Farke’s opinions are shared at boardroom level.

Leeds United to set new goals for Daniel Farke

It took two bites of the cherry for Farke to get Leeds promoted, with the Whites going up as champions last season having lost the play-off final to Southampton the campaign prior.

But, their first campaign back in the top flight has to be considered a success by any measurable metric, and Leeds could still finish as high as 11th in the table.

Leeds also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they were beaten by Chelsea at Wembley, so Farke’s assertion that new goals need to be set do feel entirely fair.

Indeed, Lowy – a lifelong Leeds fan and sharesholder – says the plan is to meet up collectively in the coming weeks to discuss where the next destination is.

Speaking to the Athletic, Lowy said: “If you look at the business, Daniel is an executive in one section, (there are other sections and) they’ve all met their goals.

“Where Daniel is right, is we need to sit down, which we will do now, and set a new set of goals.

“We had a four-year plan that we did in three. Now, we need another three-year plan. If you look at how I worked at Westfield and how the 49ers work, there are tactical issues and strategic issues.

“What Daniel was talking about was the strategic issue of the long-term plan, how we do it. We need to sit down and do it again because we got there a little early.”

What is Daniel Farke’s contract situation at Leeds United?

Farke has, at times, divided opinion among the fanbase at Elland Road, with some questioning whether he has a good enough track record in the top flight.

In fairness, he has largely answered those questions this season, but there is a real thirst to keep improving and that in itself brings a different pressure.

Still, it looks as though he will get an opportunity to prove himself, though there is the question of his contract situation to sort out.

Farke’s current contract runs until the summer of 2027, and if they are to set new goals for the manager, and if they are to back him in the transfer window, it stands to reason that a new deal will eventually be forthcoming.

It’s certainly one to keep an eye on now that the end of the season is within sight.
