Why Leeds United may have to wait for Charlie Cresswell transfer windfall after latest agreement

Leeds United sold Charlie Cresswell to Toulouse in 2024 in a deal that included a reported sell-on clause.

Since making the switch to the French top flight, the Englishman has been impressing and the LS11 outfit have been waiting to learn the outcome of his future.

Now, in 2026, Cresswell has finally moved on from Toulouse, but has remained in Ligue 1.

Stade Rennes have officially confirmed the defender's arrival ahead of the 2026-27 season.

However, it is the confirmation from Toulouse that will be of most interest to the Whites in relation to their sell-on clause.

The arrangement in which the agreement has been made will have implications of when the Whites will receive their sell-on income.

When will Leeds get Charlie Cresswell windfall?

Those at Elland Road will have been watching over transfer developments between Toulouse and Stade Rennes.

Cresswell's move has now been confirmed by both clubs with Leeds expecting to earn money from the deal.

It has paved the way for that sell-on clause to be activated, but delays over that income are likely based on the agreement between Rennes and Toulouse.

Toulouse have now confirmed that the agreement over the transfer is a loan move with a mandatory buy option.

Unfortunately, for the Whites, this means that they will have to wait to land the income from the sell-on clause included when Leeds sold Cresswell.

That will now likely arrive next season, when the permanent transfer for the defender officially goes through. As technically, he is still a Toulouse player at the moment.

This will be frustrating, but it does also mean that the Whites have a guaranteed windfall coming their way.

They could still utilise those funds now, knowing full well it is 100 per cent confirmed.

How much will Leeds receive from Cresswell sale?

Leeds' sell-on clause from Cresswell is reportedly 15 per cent of the profit that Toulouse receive from his sale.

According to previous reports from journalist David Ornstein, Rennes have paid a package of a £2.1m loan fee with £19.27m in fixed payments as well as £2.5m in bonuses.

Originally, the now 23-year-old centre-back departed Elland Road in a deal around £3.8m, much less than what Pascal Struijk was just sold for.

So, based on the fixed transfer fee minus how much Toulouse paid, Leeds will earn around £2.3m of the reported media figures.
