Leeds United have taken legal action against Leicester City.

In the 2023-2024 season, the Foxes secured promotion to the Premier League but have since been found to have broken PSR restrictions.

In that campaign, the Whites finished in third place, eventually losing to Southampton in the play-off finals.

Now, they feel that Leicester's breaking of the rules handed them an unfair advantage and are seeking to claim damages.

This comes as a result of Burnley's landmark precedent when they took similar action against Everton.

The Toffees were ordered to pay the Clarets £35million, although they have since appealed the decision.

What will Leeds United's lawsuit against Leicester City mean for the Elland Road club?

Leeds United feel that they have unfairly missed out on the financial rewards of an earlier Premier League promotion due to Leicester City breaking the rules.

Now, The Athletic have reported that Leeds have officially began those proceedings against the League One side.

The report shares that "Leeds have included specific losses, but also requested an assessment of damages as a result of Leicester’s PSR breach."

Burnley's case against Everton has been cited as a reason for the LS11 side setting these proceedings into motion.

But, it has also been shared that the Claret's situation "does not set a binding precedent."

Nonetheless, Leeds will be hoping for a similar outcome of receiving a large financial sum, and that could help them across the board.

But they will have to wait quite a while for that answer on whether they are successful in earning anything near £35m, or any sum at all.

The hearing for Leeds United versus Leicester City will not take place until the summer of 2027.

Leeds United may consider more than legal action as Premier League 'sham' called out by expert

How long will the legal case take once hearing starts?

While there is a year's wait before the hearing starts, the arguments will not take quite as long.

In Burnley's proceedings against Everton, the official documents show that the hearing took place over 10 separate days between 17 September 2025 and 9 October 2025.

However, it then took 245 days until 11 June when it first emerged that Everton had to pay the Turf Moor club.

So, while the hearing against Leicester will take place in the summer of 2027, it could very well be until 2028 that the Whites get their answer.

But, every court case is different and with an already set precedent, that could help move things along more smoothly.

Nonetheless, the previous ruling has provided a clearer idea of what to expect.
