Phil Hay shares if Leeds United will change name of Elland Road after Red Bull investment

Leeds United will not be changing the name of the club or Elland Road after Red Bull purchased a minority stake in the club, according to Phil Hay.

Writing on their website (30 May), The Athletic journalist reports that the soft drinks giant have agreed a deal with the 49ers Enterprises to become part owners as part of the 49ers group which includes celebrities like Will Ferrell.

But while Red Bull have previously purchased Salzburg and Leipzig, changing their stadium names, kit colours and names in the process, that is not on the table at Leeds and won’t be discussed as part of the deal as they won’t be on the club’s board.

Leeds United traditions must be respected by 49ers and Red Bull

Money rules the world in this day and age, and it would be easy for an American investment firm in the 49ers to let cash talk and convince them to do things like change the name of Elland Road or the club.

But they understand tradition and what it means to the wider community, so it’s fantastic to hear that there is absolutely no chance of that happening as part of this deal.

Red Bull have had successful ownerships of their other clubs, despite the controversy surrounding them, however they don’t have the same type of role at Leeds.

It seems to be just an investment deal to help boost the finances of the club, which can only be seen as a positive thing.

With failure to get back to the Premier League affecting summer plans, it’s good to see the 49ers have finances in order and it’s an exciting time.

In other Leeds news, the club want to sign a 23 y/o who was just released by a Premier League club.
