Red Bull could increase the size of its stake in Leeds United as a new behind-the-scenes decision is made, according to Matt Hughes.

The journalist reported via CityAM [18 December] that the energy drinks giant is cutting funding allocated to other sports with a view of increasing their focus on football.

It is understood that Red Bull is planning to make further investments next year, owning the likes of Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig and RB Bragatino, and the Whites could be a beneficiary.

Red Bull to increase stake in Leeds United?

An influx of cash ahead of the January transfer window could be massive news for Leeds, and could certainly be the difference between automatic promotion and a Championship play-off spot.

The club have already been linked with a plethora of players, ranging from Aston Villa ace Emi Buendia to Maccabi Tel Aviv's Dor Turgeman [Daily Mail], and Red Bull could be a driving force next month.

However, an increase in Red Bull's stake at Elland Road could come with other changes, which some fans might be rather sceptical of, given the 49ers Enterprises' current ownership.

Investment is hugely important, especially for a club aiming to gain promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking, but fans may not want too many changes right now.

With the number of players being linked with a move to Elland Road and the number of players currently taking up funds at the club, Leeds may have no choice but to welcome new funds in the form of an increased stake.

Elland Road Leeds United
Leeds United are planning on redeveloping Elland Road.

Of course, if Daniel Farke can lead the team to the Premier League this term, more funds from Red Bull could make it far easier for the club to remain in the division for the foreseeable future.

Clubs are changing all the time, and given the redevelopment plans for Elland Road in the near future, Red Bull may be able to push them into the next era with an increased stake in Leeds United.
