Leeds United are often used as an example when assessing the finances of Premier League clubs.

The Whites famously dropped all the way to League One and were hit by several points deductions along the way at the start of the century.

Selling Elland Road and Thorp Arch at the time, administration hit in 2007.

While completely different to Manchester City's 114 breaches of financial rules and other PSR trouble to the likes of Everton, it's still used as a case study.

Things couldn't be more different now, though, with the 49ers Enterprises taking Leeds to places at the completely different end of the scale under Daniel Farke.

Jamie Carragher has used Leeds and their drama from his playing days to get a feel for how fans actually look at the current state of the Premier League.

What has been said about Leeds United?

There are several different examples of financial trouble in recent Premier League history.

Leicester is a recent example, Portsmouth going under and Chelsea's trouble over secret agent payments.

Nothing will be as big as Manchester City, though, with fans in the Premier League eagerly awaiting their punishment.

Speaking on the Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher was quick to use old Leeds examples to compare current situations in the Premier League.

"You had your own financial issues in 2003, are you glad that there are rules in place to look after and support clubs not to get in those financial positions again," he quizzed a fan.

After using several examples of clubs going under, Leeds' fan representative also admitted gloom around the current rules and how they work to benefit the so-called big six.

Carragher continued and questioned whether it can still bring success.

"I know everyone goes back to Leicester, but realistically, what are the chances of you seeing Leeds United win the Premier League title."

The answer? Not very likely, right now.

Leeds example is completely different

As mentioned, this is far from just simply breaking financial rules.

Peter Ridsdale took out massive loans and gambled on Leeds continually qualifying for the Champions League.

That simply didn't happen and the debt just spiralled.

It took Leeds over a decade to bounce back, but with the 49ers Enterprises now in place, things look different.

Debt was taken away, Elland Road was purchased and redevelopment work is now underway to transform the stadium.

That is one way to increase revenue massively to help within the current financial rules, but it costs hundreds of millions to even get to that stage.

Signings like Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford will also help with that, but this is just the start of the journey for Leeds and they won't get carried away like all those years ago.
