Live from Elland Road: Same old Leeds story as U23s draw 1-1 v Burnley

It was the same old story for Leeds United on Monday evening at Elland Road, as their under-23s couldn’t turn their dominance into three points in a 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Carlos Corberan had the luxury of many first-team names to call upon for the fixture. Liam Cooper, Jamie Shackleton, Tyler Roberts, and Jack Clarke were all involved.

The Whites’ youngsters went into the game winless in four, whereas Burnley had managed to start the season unbeaten in the PDL North.

You wouldn’t have been able to tell at the beginning of the game, with Leeds immediately going onto the front foot.

The link between Liam McCarron and Clarke was causing all sorts of problems down the left-hand side, and it was these two who created the first chance. A quick one-two released the winger, who fired a ball into the box which Ryan Edmondson couldn’t convert.

It wasn’t long before the dominance of Leeds paid off, and it was McCarron who created the goal. A lovely floated ball into the middle of the box found Edmondson, who made amends by firing a header in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal to give his side the lead.

Leeds went in at half-time one goal to the good and cruising to victory. Cooper was replaced at half-time after picking up a knock – something we hope is not too serious.

The second half immediately brought change to the game. Burnley came back into the clash, with Alfie McCalmont looking increasingly isolated in midfield.

A clumsy tackle from Pascal Struijk gave Burnley the chance to equalise from the spot midway through the second half. Josh Benson stepped up and dispatched it with ease, sending Illan Meslier the wrong way.

Leeds pushed for a winner towards the end of the game but often made the wrong decision on the counter-attack to halt their progress.

Edmondson missed the chance he would have been hoping for in the final five minutes, and Corberan’s youngsters had to settle for a point on a frustrating evening.
