Leeds United to pry on Sheffield United vulnerability for Gus Hamer transfer

Leeds United could potentially force Sheffield United to cash in on Gus Hamer in the upcoming transfer window.

According to The Star on 5 May, the Dutchman’s future at Bramall Lane is uncertain and his contract situation will leave the Blades vulnerable in the summer.

The news outlet reports that Chris Wilder wants to keep the 28-year-old, whose exit from the South Yorkshire club isn’t a given, and that an extension isn’t ruled out if the right offer is made.

It remains to be seen how things unfold, with Hamer being linked with a move to Elland Road in recent months, and the Whites may be back in for him soon.

Daniel Farke must be backed by 49ers Enterprises after all, but confirming Premier League survival and improving quality in depth will certainly be key for the West Yorkshire outfit to progress next season.

Gus Hamer would be perfect fit at Leeds United

Hamer is the sort of player Leeds fans would welcome with open arms, with the Dutchman probably similar to Anton Stach.

The Brazil-born star made 37 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring five goals, providing 12 assists and creating 16 big chances, as per Sofascore.

With Hamer mainly operating on the left, he could surely complement what Stach has brought to Farke’s system as an advanced midfielder from the right.

Hamer’s league record this season

The Sheffield United ace averaged 1.9 shots and 1.8 key passes per game and two of his five goals have come from outside the box.

Apart from the Blades midfielder’s attacking impetus, he recorded 0.9 tackles, 3.1 ball recoveries and won possession 0.5 times in the final third.

Daniel Farke has decision to make at Elland Road

Farke showed tactical nous midway through the season after switching to a 5-2-2-1 formation, which has brought Leeds much-needed success.

The Whites are close to avoiding relegation, but it will be interesting to see whether the German manager will want to tweak his system once again ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Traditionally, Farke has liked to play four defenders and a possession-based style, something he may need to think about in the coming months.

It wouldn’t be wise to change an approach that has proved influential for the West Yorkshire outfit, but only time will tell what the 49-year-old head coach is thinking.
