'Massive club' - Manchester United icon comments on Leeds rivalry, offers PL verdict
Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has admitted that he would love to see Leeds United back in the Premier League.
The Red Devils head of first-team development at Old Trafford claimed that the Whites are a massive club, claiming his former side miss that healthy rivalry with Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
Butt was speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s FA Youth Cup tie between the under-18 sides, claiming that the Manchester youngsters haven’t needed any reminders about the magnitude of the game.
“I’ve been to many Leeds games from when I was younger with my uncle, my cousin and my dad and I went to Elland Road a good few times as a younger kid. I didn’t need explaining what the rivalry is!” he told the Manchester Evening News.
“But it’s a healthy rivalry; Leeds are a great club, a massive club and I can’t wait for them to get back into the Premier League if I’m honest. Because it’s part of a healthy, really good rivalry we have and our lads will know about it.”
Not many clubs would do the same as Leeds have on Wednesday. Taking 1800 fans to an under-18s FA Youth Cup tie is special, and is only a small taster of what is to come should the senior side earn promotion to the Premier League.
Their most recent tie with a Premier League side was Arsenal in the FA Cup in January. Despite it being a Monday night, the Whites took thousands of fans down to North London and out sang the home support – something all other 19 top-flight clubs will have to get used too if promotion is secured.
