We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson expects Illan Meslier to start playing for the France senior squad soon with the Leeds United goalkeeper still making do with Under-21s football.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported on 26 September that Meslier, 22, is yet to play in the French first team because he’s still eligible for the Under-21s and will be able to play for them at the Under-21s European Championships in Romania and Georgia next summer.

It is understood that while Meslier will be 23 by the time that tournament kicks off, he was eligible for the Under-21s when qualifying starting, meaning he’s able to play in the main competition in 2023.

“I think we forget how young Meslier is and the amount of competition he’s got with France,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

He’s got so much time on his side and it’s only going to be a matter of time.

Hugo Lloris does extremely well every week with Tottenham but there’s talk about how long his Tottenham career will last and his international career will go hand in hand with that.

Nine times out of 10 you find a player stops playing international football before club football.

It’s not something from Meslier’s point of view that I’d be too worried about. It’s a case of when and not if.

He’s definitely going to go into that France squad at some point and he’s definitely going to play at some point. It’s just a case of him biding his time and waiting for the call.”

Hay claims that Meslier is actually wanted by Tottenham, seemingly as a long-term replacement for 35-year-old Lloris, who’ll turn 36 in December.

The ex-Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said: “In simple terms, he is the player the club are most likely to receive big money bids for next summer, and it is no surprise that with Lloris into his mid-thirties and on course to be out of contract after the 2023-24 season, Tottenham are as interested in Meslier as anyone.”
