Leeds United handed boost to sign Gustavo Hamer as Chris Wilder reveals exit conversation

Leeds United have been linked with Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer, and his manager Chris Wilder seems to have accepted that he is powerless to keep the midfielder.

There are many areas that Daniel Farke is keen to upgrade this summer, and attacking midfield is one of them.

Some of the options that the Whites have in that area are Brenden Aaronson, Noah Okafor, Anton Stach, and on-loan Brighton star, Facundo Buonanotte.

Hamer is naturally a midfielder, but has adopted a role on the left side of the pitch since Wilder’s return to the Blades, though he can be seen playing centrally on occasions.

Leeds have been tipped to sign Hamer this summer, and the signs are that he will leave Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United stuck in the Championship for another season.

What has Chris Wilder said about Leeds-linked Gustavo Hamer?

Leeds may be able to sign Hamer for a cut-price deal, with Sheffield United knowing they are powerless to keep their star man for another season.

The 28-year-old has Premier League experience and is attracting interest from the Whites and other clubs across Europe, with his exit now looming.

As seen in the table above, Hamer has excelled in the playmaking area of his game this season and finished as the Championship’s leading assister with 12.

Sheffield United finished their campaign with a 2-1 away victory over Derby County, as Hamer was the last player to leave the pitch for the Blades, with Wilder now touching on what he’s said to the Dutchman.

Wilder said, as related by The Bladesman on X: “I said to him when he was coming off, ‘If this is your last game, I really appreciate your efforts over the last 18 months for myself and the football club. I’d love to work with you again, but I understand’.

“If he stays, then great; if he doesn’t, then he has the recognition he deserves for his efforts. Supporters don’t get it wrong, and their reaction to him at the end tells the story.”

Aaronson, in particular, is a player most Leeds fans would say could do with upgrading this summer, and Hamer’s ability, energy, and defensive diligence would be welcomed in LS11.

How did Hamer cope in the Premier League?

Sheffield United bought Hamer from Coventry City in the summer of 2023, as the Blades then went on to finish rock-bottom of the Premier League that season, almost breaking Derby’s record-low points total.

Despite this, Hamer had a very respectable season in the top-flight on an individual level, and is now primed for Leeds to buy him, with his prime years in front of him.

Without Hamer, the Blades may not have even got onto double figures for points that campaign, as he was involved in more than a third of their 28 goals scored.

He was the only one who looked like a top-class Premier League player, and it should be something that Leeds fans take confidence in, should the Whites get a deal over the line this summer.
