'Insane; Massive implications legally': Some Leeds fans react to what Phil Hay's heard about EFL

Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said there is “some chatter developing about ending the EFL season here and now” and plenty of Leeds United fans have reacted on Twitter.

Football is currently suspended in the UK amid the Coronavirus outbreak, with tentative plans being talked about to resume training in mid-May before playing the remaining fixtures from June onwards.

However, there are clubs in the EFL who have serious financial concerns around the loss of revenue from fans. Some of them favour ending the season early.

In a previous article Hay posted alongside his comment about what he’s heard, it was said the Championship is still keen to play out the matches – at the moment.

However, there is a precedent of sorts in Scotland where an SPFL resolution has already ended all leagues below the Premiership and given the governing body the power to do the same to the top flight if fixtures can’t be played safely.

There are a number of ways the season could be ended early. The 19/20 season could be voided completely, struck from the records as if it never happened.

That would mean Leeds missing out on promotion and spending at least another season in the Championship.

Alternatively, results could be taken as they are at present or the league decided on an average points-per-game basis (this is what has happened in Scotland). Either of these options would see Leeds promoted.

Meanwhile, the Dutch FA admitted their season was effectively over after their government suspended football until at least September.
