Many Oldham fans are furious that Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont wasn’t included in the matchday squad to face Newport County.
The midfielder has made 14 League Two appearances for Latics this season, picking up three goals and two assists in those outings.
However, the 20-year-old was dropped from Saturday’s squad as league rules only allow five loanees to feature in a matchday squad.
📋 Here's how Latics line-up against Newport County:
🔷 Adams has been handed the captaincy on his debut.
🔶 McCalmont misses out due to being the sixth loan.
🔷 Dearnley is sidelined through injury. #oafc— Oldham Athletic (@OfficialOAFC) January 23, 2021
With Latics heavily relying on loans this season it means that one of their six loan players will have to miss out on making the squad each week.
This week it was McCalmont’s turn but many Oldham fans were left reeling when they saw that the Leeds youngster wasn’t included in the side to face Newport.
McCalmont has been in good form recently which makes this omission even stranger.
The midfielder grabbed a goal in the recent 3-2 loss to Mansfield as his performance was one of few positives to take from the loss.
One Oldham fan called the decision to leave out McCalmont an ‘absolute disgrace’ while another called it laughable.
This also led to some Latics fans claiming that McCalmont is actually the club’s best midfielder which speaks volumes about how his loan spell is going.
Here is how some Oldham fans reacted to McCalmont missing out.
garity and grant over mcalmont is genuinely laughable

McCalmont is arguably our best midfielder. Surely he should be in the squad. We need him in there more than we do Grant.

Grant and garrity in the squad ahead of mccalmont is nothing short of an absolute disgrace. If I was Leeds I'd be calling the lad straight back, shambles

Glad Adams is straight in. Would rather Mcalmont over Garrity tbh. Though Garrity did play well when he came on last week
— Aaron (@aaronoafc) January 23, 2021
Unbelievable he wants to play Garrity above Mccalmont as the extra loan player
— Ste U (@Ste_Uren) January 23, 2021
No McCalmont in the squad is a crime

Should be making room for McCalmont 🤷🏼♀️ https://t.co/yVETg3OsZ7

With there being so much anger at McCalmont being left out of the squad, it would suggest that he is doing something right while on loan.
Let’s hope that Harry Kewell doesn’t make this mistake again as the Leeds youngster continues his development.
