'Who Leeds need to go up' – Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Orta must sign one player in Jan
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that a striker like Che Adams is what Leeds need to clinch promotion back to the Premier League.
There is growing speculation that Arsenal are set to recall Eddie Nketiah and that would leave Leeds needing to find a replacement in the January window.
Robinson thinks Adams would be the perfect signing for Leeds, although he has started the last two games for Southampton.
However, he hasn’t scored for the Premier League side in 17 games this season across all competitions.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “If there is the opportunity, if Eddie Nketiah goes, a proven goalscorer in the Championship is exactly what Leeds need.
“Patrick Bamford is scoring the goals but he needs help. He can’t play week in, week out and he’s not a 20, 25 goal a season man, although we’d like him to be.
“Someone like Che Adams, who knows the Championship, who can score goals in the Championship is exactly who Leeds need to go up.”
Robinson did fire a warning to Leeds fans though and said it would be hard to bring anyone of that sort of quality to Elland Road.
“Eddie Nketiah’s leaving because he’s not getting game time,” Robinson added. “It’s going to be hard to try convincing someone else to come and do the same job.”
Adams has struggled in the Premier League with Southampton this season after his £15m move from Birmingham but scored 22 goals in 46 Championship games for the midlands club last season.
The big question is whether he’d give up the bench in the Premier League for the bench at Elland Road.
It could all come down to Victor Orta and the lure of Marcelo Bielsa.
We do think Leeds will try to act quickly and decisively, though, with Bielsa needing time to fit new players into his system.
