Exclusive: Paul Robinson – Bielsa has 'big opportunity' to sign player after official Leeds news

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Jack Clarke being recalled has given Leeds a “big opportunity” to make a significant signing in the January window.

Robinson claims Clarke’s wages would be in a “different bracket” to what they were last season and that Leeds must use every resource to ensure promotion.

Clarke was sold to Tottenham last summer but loaned immediately back to Leeds for the season.

However, his game time has been severely limited and Leeds confirmed that Tottenham had decided to recall the player ahead of the January window opening.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “On Jack Clarke, I think it’s a really big opportunity for the manager to replace him because, with him signing for Tottenham, his wages will have been in a different bracket to what they were last year.

“Leeds will have been paying his wages and I think it’s a really good opportunity for the manager to go and get a player on the same sort of wages.

“As much as you’d like to develop the youth and bring the youth lads through, I think it’s so important now that Leeds go up.

“It’s crucial Leeds get promoted this season. The manager and coaches are on such high wages, there’s a big wage bill for the playing staff, I don’t think that can be sustained for another year in the Championship.

“It’s absolutely crucial every resource that can possibly be used in January is used and the aim is for promotion.

“Yes, the academy is producing some very, very good players but for the next four or five months, whatever it’s going to take, they need to do everything they possibly can to get back in the Premier League.”

Clarke might not be the only loan player recalled in January.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has also been struggling for game time and despite getting his first start against Birmingham, there’s speculation that he could be recalled and sent out on another loan.
