Very costly twist on cards at Leeds United after latest FIFA news – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has admitted that it will be “very costly” for all parties again as Leeds United have appealed the FIFA ruling on Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Leeds have been ordered to pay the transfer flop £24.5million as things stand due to a breach of his contract after the failed move from RB Leipzig.

Although an out-of-court settlement is said to be likely, Plumley insisted that everyone has something to lose if it does go to court in another potential twist.

“I think with these things, you see the pattern that can happen,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“A decision is made, this time with FIFA, appeal goes in and what you tend to find, more often than not, you get these settlements outside of court. It is very costly for both parties to go through that, it does take time, so everyone has something to lose in that.

“There is no suggestion it may play out like that, but more often than not, that’s the chain of events. It is no surprise to see this back and forth or the appeal, and no surprise that the club are saying they are confident of overturning it, but more often than not, these end in settlements.

“If you were looking for a prediction, that’s where you are at, but Leeds are just running this course as they have in the past so it’s no surprise to see how it is running out.”

Despite promotion back to the Premier League during his time in charge, there have been too many of these awful decisions that the time of Andrea Radrizzani will be marred.

Regardless of a full payment to Augustin, or a settlement, it is still very costly when no other well-run club in the Premier League is making these sort of decisions.

It is not good enough.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
