Sky Sports pundit wowed by Sam Greenwood, admits Leeds United worry

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson admits he wasn’t a fan of Jesse Marsch’s team selection when he first saw the Leeds United starting line-up to play Brentford on Sunday (22 May).

Leeds, who’d been hit by suspensions, injuries and illness in the build-up to the final day of the Premier League season, managed to avoid relegation with a late 2-1 win in West London.

Raphinha’s penalty and Jack Harrison’s last-gasp strike were enough to seal all three points for the Whites and send Burnley down to the Championship.

However, Marsch’s team selection prior to kick-off did cause some understandable concern.

Robinson admits he has his doubts but was really impressed by how Sam Greenwood performed on his full Premier League debut.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “Marsch’s team selection and formation raised eyebrows but Sam Greenwood thoroughly deserved his start.

Joe Gelhardt did as well.

I think it shows Leeds’ luck because Patrick Bamford missed out through COVID.

They finally get him back and can play some kind of minutes then to lose him to COVID.

But Greenwood and Gelhardt stood up [on Sunday], they were men.

Greenwood put in a particularly good performance out of position and in a very pressurised situation. He showed his mentality.”

Greenwood, 20, played as a central midfielder for the Whites on his full Premier League debut.

He’s played just 10 times in total for Leeds’ senior side.

In other Leeds United news, this player is set to undergo a medical “soon” with the Whites.
