Sky Sports pundit slams unhealthy new Leeds United signing as Joel Robles arrives

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson isn’t impressed by the signing of Joel Robles at Leeds United.

It was confirmed on Tuesday (9 August) that the 32-year-old has signed for Leeds on a permanent basis after he agreed a one-year deal with the option of an extra year.

The former Everton and Wigan goalkeeper, who was released by Real Betis at the end of last season, joins the Whites as a back-up goalkeeper to provide Jesse Marsch with an extra option away from youngsters Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson.

However, Robinson feels that Robles has just been signed for the sake of the fact Leeds needed to add to their goalkeeper options because the Spaniard doesn’t add any quality and doesn’t add any competition for current number one Meslier.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson said: “It looks like they’re just signing for the sake of signing, in all honesty.

It looks like they’ve got to a point where the transfer window is coming to an end.

Robles is a good goalkeeper with experience. He can do a job in the short term if needed.

I wouldn’t like to think Leeds would need to rely on him for 10 or 15 games in a row – you’d like to think there are better experienced goalkeepers for that who you could sign as a number one or number two to Meslier.

I don’t think Meslier will feel any threat whatsoever with Robles coming in as a number two, which is not healthy.

There should be healthy competition but the number one goalkeeper should always be pushed to be at his very best, knowing there’s a second-choice there who’s more than capable of doing his job on a long-term basis.

For me, it’s just filling a gap with Robles.

I don’t think there’s any way you go into a season with him as your number one goalkeeper.

Still, the goalkeeper ranks aren’t good enough, in my opinion.”

Robles has made 51 Premier League appearances in his career and also played 71 times in La Liga.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are in the hunt to sign this £40million-rated forward who could opt to quit a Champions League club in the coming days.
