Sky Sports pundit rages at Bielsa decision in Leeds v Newcastle, blames Roberts for defeat
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson blames Tyler Roberts for Leeds United losing 1-0 to Newcastle United at Elland Road on Saturday.
Jonjo Shelvey scored a second-half free-kick after a goalkeeping error by Illan Meslier.
Before the goal, Roberts squandered possession in the Newcastle half, allowing Javier Manquillo to run at goal.
Diego Llorente effectively had no choice but to foul Manquillo on the edge of the penalty area, otherwise, he may have been in on goal, and that led to the free-kick that Shelvey scored from.
Robinson was furious with Marcelo Bielsa’s decisions on who to play up front in the defeat to Newcastle.
Daniel James started in the striker role again but was substituted off for Roberts not long before Newcastle’s goal, even though Joe Gelhardt was on the bench.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I can’t understand why Dan James plays up front when we’ve got Rodrigo who’s the Spanish number nine.
“Bielsa seems insistent upon playing James there and what I can’t understand more than anything is he takes James off and replaces him with Tyler Roberts.
“Every time he touches the ball, he loses possession.
“He cost Leeds the game by losing possession in the opposition half yet again.
“Every time he gets the ball, regardless of where he is, he loses possession, he’s got no end-product and he came on for James and within five minutes he lost the ball and Newcastle scored.”
Roberts has played in all but one of Leeds’ Premier League matches this season, earning 23 appearances across all competitions.
In other Leeds United news, this international player has caught a flight amid bids from the Whites to sign him.
