Aaronson jets out of Austria with major Leeds United knock-on effect on the cards
Leeds United have seen their pursuit of Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson take a major new twist on Monday.
Salzburg’s official Twitter account has confirmed today [04:00pm, 24 January] that Aaronson, 21, is jetting out of Austria to head to the States, where he’s set to play for the USA national team.
The Austrian club’s website announces that Aaronson will feature in USA’s “three upcoming World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador (January 28), Canada (January 30) and Honduras (February 3)”.
Victor Orta now has it all to do with Leeds’ number one January target [Pete O’Rourke, GiveMeSport] set to be on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean in the final days of the transfer window.
While it’s still possible to do business, Leeds will surely have wanted this all wrapped up before Aaronson left for the USA, who play El Salvador in Colombus, Ohio on Friday.
Playing and training for the US team puts a spanner in the works for Leeds, who’ve already tabled two bids to sign the ex-Philadelphia Union attacking midfielder [Ryan Taylor, The Express].
It means he’s harder to reach, cannot be shown one of Orta’s famous presentations unless it’s done via Zoom and it means that a medical will have to be done in North America, rather than him flying into West Yorkshire to have one at Leeds.
It’s just something that Leeds really didn’t need but it kind of serves the club right for putting all their eggs in one basket, rather than having several irons in the fire as Orta aims to add a new midfielder to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
Aaronson sounds as though he would be a great fit but with each passing day, it seems increasingly unlikely that Orta will be able to push through a deal for the USA ace.
Let’s hope we can do a deal in the summer but Leeds will be letting their fans down massively if they do not add to the squad before 1 February comes around.
