Sky Sports pundit hears Leeds United want to sign Ben Foster as goalkeeper speculation emerges
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has urged Leeds United to sign Ben Foster after he heard his former club were linked with the exit-bound Watford goalkeeper.
Foster, 39, is set to be available on a free transfer and MailPlus reported on Saturday (25 June) that he’s being considered at Elland Road as Victor Orta looks to add an experienced shot-stopper to the squad.
Illan Meslier is Leeds’ undisputed number one but he’s the oldest goalkeeper on the books at Elland Road despite being just 22 years old.
Kristoffer Klaesson is the current second-choice goalkeeper but he’s just 21 and plays regularly for the Under-23s.
Robinson has urged Leeds to sign an experienced number two and feels that Foster would be the perfect addition.
“I said 18 months ago about Joe Hart and we’ve seen how well he’s done at Celtic. They should have signed someone of that quality,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“Illan Meslier has been excellent and I think he’s the out-and-out number one simply because he’s got no competition.
“Next season, if he gets injured or suspended, they’ve got no quality number two. And if he has a dip in form – which will happen at some point – the manager’s got no choice to stick with him and ride it out because he hasn’t got a good enough number two to put in.
“They have to go for a quality one.
“If you look around the Premier League, the other teams have quality goalkeepers. Everyone carries a top-quality number two who can do the job.
“I heard a link with Ben Foster and I think that would be an outstanding signing if they were able to pull it off.
“He’s somebody with experience who Meslier can learn from.
“But he’s also equally as good to step in and play should Meslier not be able to or wasn’t in form. It’s an area they have to address this window.”
Foster has been capped eight times by England and has made 390 appearances in the Premier League across spells at Manchester United, Watford, Birmingham and West Brom.
He’s earned 94 clean sheets in his Premier League career too.
In other Leeds United news, documents have been exchanged for this player to leave Leeds after two weeks of going back and forth.
