Rodrigo could drop out of favour at Leeds United amid summer developments - Sky pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Rodrigo is “under pressure” to keep his spot in the main Leeds United squad due to the new arrivals at Elland Road this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

Since signing for Leeds in a club-record deal from Valencia in 2020, the 31-year-old has failed to impress.

Whether he’s been played in the midfield or up front, Rodrigo has never looked totally comfortable playing for the Whites and that has led him to scoring just 13 goals and supplying three assists in 61 total appearances for the Yorkshire club.

Leeds have strengthened this summer, especially in the midfield.

And Robinson feels that Rodrigo needs to up his game after a disappointing campaign last time out if he wants to keep hold of his spot in the starting line-up at Elland Road.

“Rodrigo has got to step up to the mark,” Robinson told MOT Leeds Nrews.

I still think he has unfulfilled potential at Leeds. He’s fallen short.

He got three goals against Cagliari – it was outstanding from him – but he’s got to do it where it matters in the Premier League.

Whether he plays up front if Patrick’s not fit or whether he plays in behind, he’s got to do more than he did last season. He’s got to offer more goals and more assists.

Raphinha’s gone so Leeds need more attacking threat from Rodrigo but now he’s under pressure from the new signings.

He’s not guaranteed to play every week, he’s got to get himself in the side.”

Rodrigo scored a hat-trick at Elland Road on Sunday (31 July) as Leeds won 6-2 against Cagliari in a pre-season friendly.

He was a mainstay of Marcelo Bielsa’s time at Leeds but the arrival of new players could see the Brazil-born Spain international drop down Marsch’s pecking order.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this “phenomenal” former Premier League player who could be keen on a move to Elland Road.
