Leeds United to make 'statement signing' in January as Matheus Cunha linked - Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has told Leeds United to make a “statement signing” by landing a striker who’ll slot into Jesse Marsch’s starting line-up in January.
Patrick Bamford’s continual injury issues have been a major concern over the last two seasons and while Rodrigo is in the best form of his time at Leeds, Marsch has still tried to play him in the midfield.
Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto reported on 3 December that Leeds are interested in signing Atletico Madrid and Brazil forward Matheus Cunha ahead of the January transfer window opening.
However, Robinson is unimpressed by the 23-year-old’s struggles in La Liga and has suggested that the Whites should look elsewhere for a blockbuster addition next month.
“He’s not playing much and not getting much game time at Atletico Madrid,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“You would like to see Leeds United make a statement signing for a striker – a signing that would keep them in the league this season.
“Rodrigo deserves an opportunity to play at number nine but you can’t rely on Patrick Bamford being fit.
“I don’t want to see another body coming into the squad for the sake of another body coming into the squad because they need a striker.
“I’d like to see them make a signing that would make an impact on the starting 11 and for me, Cunha had a couple of good seasons in Germany but he’s a bit-part player at Atletico.
“I’d like to see Leeds United go into the market and make a statement signing.”
Atletico signed Cunha from Hoffenheim in August 2021 for £22million.
He’d been in red-hot form in Germany but since moving to Spain, the striker has scored just seven goals in 54 appearances across all competitions.
This season, he’s failed to score and supplied two assists in 17 total appearances, starting just twice in La Liga.
In other Leeds United news, a Premier League legend has made a move to sign this Leeds player ahead of January.
