‘Really disappointed’ – Paul Robinson reacts after big Bielsa claim made by reliable journalist

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has said he is “really disappointed” that Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly only going to sign another one-year deal with Leeds United.

Mirror journalist David Anderson reported that news on Sunday and said an official announcement would be made this week.

Robinson said the issue is that come January everyone will start talking about his future again. He said he wished that Bielsa had signed a two-year deal.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I’m really disappointed that it’s only one year. I’m disappointed it’s not two years.

“He usually signs one-year deals, we know that, but what it means is around Christmas or January every year we end up talking about Bielsa’s contract again.

“I’m disappointed it’s not two years.

“It’s obvious what he’s brought to the club, we’ve waxed lyrical about him all the time.

“When he does finally leave he can pick the corner of Elland Road he wants his statue on, he’s had that much of an impact.

“But it’s disappointing it’s only one year for me. It means we’re going to get to January no matter how well we’re doing next season and just talking about Bielsa’s future.”

We had hoped for a longer contract but they’re actually a bit of an irrelevance.

When Bielsa wants to leave he will leave, contract or no contract. He won’t leave Leeds in the lurch but if he signed a two-year deal and wanted out next summer, no one at the club would stand in his way.

From Bielsa’s point of view, he’s said before that shorter deals work on both sides, so if results don’t go well the club can get rid of him easily.

We can’t see that happening next season or for as long as Bielsa decides he wants to stay at the club.
