We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has warned Raphinha about getting too big for his boots at Leeds United amid talks over a new contract.
Speaking on Friday, ahead of Leeds’ win at West Ham on Sunday, Marcelo Bielsa was quoted by the Independent as hailing the decision to open discussions with Raphinha, 25, about improving his terms at Elland Road.
Raphinha’s deal expires in two and a half years but the Brazil international has been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs [Independent].
Robinson is delighted that talks are underway too and has urged Raphinha to remember why he’s in the position he is and wants him to show some loyalty.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “It’s very important the club do [get Raphinha to sign a new deal] and it’s also very important that he doesn’t get too far above his station.
“He needs to remember what got him to where he is now.
“Raphinha is going to be linked with Champions League clubs and bigger clubs than Leeds but his work rate on the field, off the field and his attitude around the place has to remain the same. He has to remain grounded.
“Yes, Raphinha is the best player Leeds have got and he’s one of the best players in the Premier League. But he can never go away and forget what got him there and what put him to that level.
“It’s important Leeds tie him to a long-term contract.”
Raphinha joined Leeds from Rennes in October 2020 for £17million.
He’s since scored 14 goals and supplied 11 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
This season, the Brazilian attacker has scored eight times in 18 Premier League matches.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are able to bankroll a major bid to sign this central midfielder.
