We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United
Paul Robinson has said that Leeds have a “huge problem” that is a ticking time bomb for the rest of the Premier League campaign.
He said the defeat against Crawley highlights the desperate lack of depth in the Leeds squad, especially in the striker and goalkeeper positions.
Patrick Bamford was rested for the game with new summer signing Rodrigo starting up front. He was replaced by winger Jack Harrison in the second half.
Kiko Casilla was shambolic in goal in the absence of Illan Meslier.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “The two key positions that really concern me and that would throw up a huge problem if there are injuries between now and the end of the season are the striker and goalkeeper.
“I think that was highlighted on Sunday. That really shows you how short in depth those areas of the Leeds squad are.
“If Meslier was injured then Kiko would play and it looks like if Bamford was injured then Rodrigo would start as the number nine.
“Neither one was anywhere near as good as Bamford or Meslier have been this season.
“They’re the two positions that Leeds are going to really struggle with between now and the end of the season.
“I’ve talked about Leeds bringing in an experienced goalkeeper before and most clubs have three players in that position.
“Jack Harrison was playing up-front in the second half against Crawley and we saw how that ended up.
Rodrigo has been played in the number 10 position since signing, although he is used as a striker for Spain.
It’s tough to make a big judgement on Rodrigo as a striker with the entire team under-performing in the FA Cup.
However, fans are right to be worried about the gloves at Leeds with Casilla the only senior option after Meslier.
Many fans wanted him out of the club after his ban for racist abuse and his performance at Crawley has won him no new fans.
