We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that Ian Poveda has grabbed ‘big status’ in the Leeds dressing room after his standout performance against Man City.
Poveda, who signed on a permanent deal from Man City in January, had his best game in a Leeds shirt in the 1-1 draw with the Premier League giants.
He changed the game in the second half and eventually forced Pep Guardiola to take Ben Mendy off.
Robinson claimed Poveda would get even better under Bielsa.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I like him a lot.
I think the only thing that might hold him back is he’s such an impact player off the bench. You saw that when he came on against Man City.
“He came in from Man City last season. He came into the squad and then dropped straight out of the squad.
“I’m not sure what it was, if he wasn’t ready or fit enough, but he gives you something else. He’s direct and he’s quick and he had a big impact against Man City.
“To do that against Man City will have given him a big status in the dressing room. He’ll be thought of differently among his peers now.
“He’s still very young. I’m surprised Man City allowed him to go permanently, to be honest, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they had first option to buy him back.
“And I think he can get better. We’ve seen very little of him but I really like what I’ve seen so far.”
Poveda was given a warm handshake at the final whistle of the Man City game by Guardiola.
Leeds could have won the game after his introduction and the second-half performance of new signing Rodrigo.
Both players should be involved in the next Premier League game against Wolves on Monday.
