Pundit blasts Leeds United forward Roberts, was 'so poor it was unreal' in loss to Newcastle
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has slammed Tyler Roberts for his performance off the bench as Leeds United lost 1-0 to Newcastle at Elland Road on Saturday.
Roberts, 23, was substituted into the game in the 71st minute and just three minutes later, the Wales international lost possession of the ball, which led to a Newcastle free-kick that Jonjo Shelvey scored the winner from.
As shown on Match of the Day on Saturday night [22 January, 20m19s], footage shows Roberts trying to make an impossible pass through Javier Manquillo, who went on to win the free-kick.
Roberts replaced Daniel James when he came off the bench as Joe Gelhardt was overlooked by Marcelo Bielsa for almost another 10 minutes.
But by the time Gelhardt did get a chance, the damage was done.
Robinson really isn’t impressed with Roberts and feels Gelhardt should be above him in the pecking order.
“Gelhardt has an impact and he’s forward-thinking, he’s a striker and he’s got a bit of guile about him around the box,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“Whereas Roberts, as good and as willing he is as a runner, there’s just no end-product there and there’s only so many times you can pick a player because he works hard off the ball when the end-product isn’t there.
“He was so poor it was unreal.”
Roberts has consistently been chosen by Biela this season.
Despite his poor form, the Welshman is a clear favourite of Bielsa’s and has played in all but one Premier League match in 2021/22.
The only league match that Roberts hasn’t played in was due to a suspension for five yellow cards.
In other Leeds United news, this international player has caught a flight amid bids from the Whites to sign him.
