Paul Robinson wants Leeds United to sign Germany star Robin Gosens

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson wants Leeds United to make a statement this summer and sign Germany and Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens.

Gosens, 26, has risen to prominence at the European Championships this summer and put in a top-class performance for the Germans in their 4-2 win over Portugal at the weekend.

The former Vitesse player, who can play anywhere on the left-hand side of the pitch, scored one and assisted two for Germany in their huge win over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Robinson has been totally blown away by the Atalanta player’s performances and would love to see Leeds to sign him this season to be their new left-back for next season.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the ex-goalkeeper said: “He’s a top player. Considering that only a few years ago he was working in a petrol station, it’s been a huge improvement and I think he would be a great signing for Leeds.

He’s had a real impact in this tournament with Germany. He looks great going forward, can play higher up in the left-midfield, he can play defensively at left-back.

I’ve been asked to do my team of the tournament so far and he’s in there – I think he’s been that good.

He’d be a very good signing for Leeds and it would make the right noises if you see players like that making an impact at a tournament and then Leeds go and make a statement and sign that player.

I’ve seen Atalanta play a few times this season and obviously seen him play a few times but I didn’t realise his ability going forward.

In the Portugal game, he caught everyone’s attention. He’s one of the players of the tournament so for Leeds to make that signing, it would be a statement signing.”

Gosens spent most of last season playing as a left wing-back for Atalanta as they finished third in Serie A.

He scored 12 goals and supplied eight assists in 44 appearances across all competitions with one of those goals coming in Atalanta’s win against Liverpool in the Champions League group stages.

With Ezgjan Alioski’s contract set to expire and Leeds needing a better left-back anyway, Gosens would definitely be a star addition to this team before the start of next season.

In other Leeds United news, this central midfielder is ready to quit his club in favour of joining the Whites.
