Paul Robinson stunned by short holiday for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson is shocked by how little time off Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips was given after helping England to the European Championships final this summer.
Speaking in a video clip that was uploaded to Twitter on July 13, Phillips revealed he had been given “11 days off” by Marcelo Bielsa before having to returning to training with the Whites.
Of course, that means Phillips should already be back in training with Leeds and he might even be involved for the pre-season friendly against Guiseley on Tuesday night, although that seems unlikely.
Former Leeds and England goalkeeper Robinson cannot believe how short a holiday Phillips is getting after such a tough season with Leeds and a long summer campaign with England at the Euros.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “If he’s only got 11 days off then it’s a very, very short break.
“When we played in the Euros or in World Cups, we’d get a minimum of two-and-a-half or three weeks. I think that’s what a lot of the other players have got.
“When I was in Qatar working [on Euro 2020] for beIN SPORTS, Peter Schmeichel was there and when the Danes got knocked out, Kasper Schmeichel got three weeks from that day so I think clubs generally do try to give players as much time as they possibly can.
“But obviously, the manager is going to want them fit and ready to go for the first game of the season.
“11 days is short and you do worry further down the line because we know how hard Leeds train.
“Players need a rest and a holiday, especially after the season Kalvin’s had. 11 days is one of the shortest I’ve ever heard of.”
Phillips played 29 times in the Premier League last season as the Whites finished ninth.
He missed nine matches due to injury and Leeds only won two of those matches without him, losing the other seven.
If there’s one player you don’t want to be injured then it’s Phillips.
Bielsa knows what he’s doing but you cannot help but feel that the midfielder needed more time off.
