Kristoffer Klaesson left out of Valerenga squad today with Leeds United deal close

Kristoffer Klaesson has been left out of Valerenga’s squad to play against Lyn today (Sunday) as the goalkeeper reportedly edges closer to joining Leeds United.

Valerenga tweeted prior to kick-off that Kjetil Haug starts in goals with Klaesson, 20, not even making the bench.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has reported that Klaesson is due to travel to Leeds soon to complete a medical.

Almost confirmation

Valerenga’s decision to play Haug in goal pretty much confirms that Klaesson is close to joining Leeds unless he’s suffered an injury in the last few days

He played on Thursday night in Valerenga’s 4-0 Europa Conference League defeat to Gent and had played every minute of every league game for the Olso club this season until this weekend.

It’s very likely that Klaesson isn’t in the squad because he could already be on his way to England to tie up his transfer.

Ex-Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay reported that the Norway Under-21 international will be set to join Leeds next week.

However, since then, Norwegian journalist Wegard Bakkehaug reported that Klaesson will be travelling to England today (Sunday) before joining in a deal worth an initial £2million before future bonuses.

Leeds now have their goalkeeper situation almost cleared up with Illan Meslier to play as the number one next term and Klaesson as his back-up.

It’d be nice to see the young Norwegian shot-stopper genuinely compete with Meslier because it could serve as a major benefit to both of their developments at Elland Road.

Valerenga’s goalkeeping coach Gjermund Østby recently told Total Football Analysis that he’s “very impressed” with Klaesson’s mentality, especially after a “brilliant” rise in his form.

He also said: “He has a very good attitude in terms of being a professional player and he is very willing to learn and improve.

“[Klaesson] has improved a lot the last 12 months in terms of the tactical part of the game, on crosses and he is more stable in his performances.”

As for Kiko Casilla, it’s hard to see a way back for him once his loan at Elche expires at the end of the season.

Next summer, we could see the Spaniard leave for good.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this Yorkshire-born forward on loan.
