Paul Robinson: Leeds United star Illan Meslier to play for France senior side
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United
Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is destined to play for France’s senior team in the future, according to Paul Robinson.
Meslier, 21, played all but three of Leeds’ Premier League fixtures this season, keeping an impressive 11 clean sheets in the process.
Much to Robinson’s surprise, the ex-Lorient ‘keeper only made his first appearance for France’s Under-21s on Monday as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands.
Robinson believes that must be down to the overall quality of France’s young goalkeeper but he has no doubt Meslier will go on to earn a senior cap in the future.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the ex-Leeds goalkeeper said: “He’s surprised he’s not played more for the Under-21s.
“There was talk of him being called up to the full national squad and with him only making his first appearance for the Under-21s, it’s surprising, he’s done so well this season.
“France must have a strong crop of young goalkeepers if he’s only just making their Under-21s.
“It’s an old cliche but I suppose it’ll be the first of many for him.
“It’ll be a short-lived stay in the Under-21s, he’ll be in the full senior squad very quickly.”
Leeds paid just £5million to sign Meslier permanently from Lorient last summer [LeedsLive] and based on his performances in the Premier League, that was an absolute bargain.
We’re yet to see Meslier linked with a move on from Elland Road but there’s no doubt there’ll be rich and powerful teams monitoring the young Frenchman.
France do have a lot of strength in their goalkeeper department.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, Marseille’s Steve Mandanda and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan are in France’s squad for the Euros this summer while Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola, who was on loan at Fulham this season, is also in the pecking order for Meslier to compete with.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this 35-cap international more than any other club this summer.
