Leeds interest in Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez is 'most concrete'

Leeds United want to sign Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez more than anyone else, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Italian news outlet cites a report by Unione Sarda, which claims new Roma manager Jose Mourinho is also keen on the 25-year-old Uruguay ace, but then also adds that “the most concrete interest is from Leeds”.

CalcioMercato has previously reported that Nandez’s release clause at Cagliari is worth £31.1million but the central midfielder could be sold for less than that.

Expensive versatility

Marcelo Bielsa loves a player who can play in an array of positions and Nandez can do exactly that.

While he’s a central midfielder by trade and could plug a hole that Leeds need filling in the summer transfer window, Nandez is also capable of playing out on the wings or in a deep-lying midfield role.

This season, the 35-times Uruguay international made 32 Serie A appearances for Cagliari as they finished 16th, avoiding relegation to Serie B.

Nandez scored two goals and supplied three assists in Italy’s top-flight for the Sardinian club with stats by WhoScored showing he completed 77.7 per cent of his passes.

We’re not going to lie – Nandez’s stats don’t impress us at all.

Defensively, he averaged 1.8 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.5 clearances and 0.1 blocks per league appearances for Cagliari this season with none of them among the best in the Serie A club’s squad.

On the ball, his passing accuracy is average at best while he averaged one key pass per outing and 0.8 crosses.

Again, none of these are the best in the Cagliari squad so what is it that Nandez could offer to Leeds?

If Bielsa wants him then we’d trust that he’d be a good signing but we’d be a bit disappointed based on the numbers he’s achieved in the last year.

In other Leeds United news, this £17million “revelation” who’s wanted by Leeds is very likely to be on the move in the summer.
