Paul Robinson: Leeds United can get £8m+ for Valencia-linked Helder Costa

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson predicts Leeds United could strike a deal worth £8million plus add-ons to see Helder Costa move on this summer.

Last week, The Athletic’s Phil Hay reported that Costa, 27, might leave Elland Road if Marcelo Bielsa signs a new winger before the transfer window closes.

It is understood that the ex-Wolves attacker, who cost the Whites £16million last summer, has already attracted interest from Valencia.

Former Leeds goalkeeper Robinson was unimpressed by Costa’s performances in the Premier League last season and expects to see the Portuguese winger move on.

He also feels that the Yorkshire club could get at least half of their money back for the attacker.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I’d be surprised if Helder Costa was at Leeds come the end of the transfer window.

He had an indifferent season last year. I thought he was great the year before but last season, he was in and out of the team.

There was a time last season where he and Jack Harrison alternated but Jack played that well he made the position his own with Raphinha and the other attacking players.

I don’t think Helder is at the level we wanted or expected last year and I think he is a player they’ll move on.

If they can get anything like the money they paid for him, which I think would be tough, if they can recoup anything over £10million then it would be a move that would work for both parties.

I suspect that he’s at an age now where he wants to play regular first-team football and guaranteed more football than he’s going to get at Leeds.

Leeds wouldn’t mind freeing up the wages and getting some kind of a transfer fee in.

You’d be looking at around £8million to £10million. Maybe £8million plus add-ons.”

While Costa has never been seen as a star player in Bielsa’s Leeds squad, he did play a big role in the Whites’ promotion-winning season.

However, he found it difficult to assert his spot in Bielsa’s starting line-up last term after the arrival of Raphinha.

In total, the Portuguese ace has made 69 appearances for Leeds in all competitions, scored eight goals and supplied 11 assists.

In other Leeds United news, this winger has been spotted at another Yorkshire club ahead of a potential exit.
