Paul Robinson defends Leeds United star Illan Meslier v Spurs

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson has insisted that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier didn’t make a mistake in conceding the first goal against Spurs on Sunday.

The former Whites goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, analysed the first conceded goal as any goalkeeping coach would.

Meslier was drawn out of goal before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg slid home the equalising effort in the capital.

“First of all, I think he gets drawn out to Son,” he told MOT Leeds News.

“He gets involved in a passage of play that he probably shouldn’t have got involved in, he’s too far out of the goal.

“It’s being hypocritical, but from a goalkeeping coaches point of view, you would say ‘do you need to get involved?’ if he hadn’t, would he have got nearer the finish because it wasn’t a great finish.

“Meslier still nearly got there but it’s by no means a mistake.

Meslier has only managed to keep one clean sheet so far this season in the Premier League, and that was against Watford.

Despite that, he has been tipped to take his spot in the senior French side further down the line as he shines for their younger age groups this season.

Kristoffer Klaesson is currently the backup option at Elland Road with the Norweigian youth international yet to make his senior debut in the Premier League.
