Paul Robinson raves about Freddie Woodman after Leeds United bid
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has dubbed Freddie Woodman a “fantastic” goalkeeper after the Newcastle United ace was linked with a move to Leeds United.
Kiko Casilla left Leeds earlier this week to join La Liga side Elche on a season-long loan and that has left Marcelo Bielsa needing a new number two to support Illan Meslier.
The Newcastle Chronicle has since reported that the Whites have made a cash offer to sign Woodman, 24, after two impressive seasons on loan at Swansea in the Championship.
While Robinson rates Woodman, he wants Marcelo Bielsa to have a more experienced goalkeeper as his number two.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robbo said: “He’s still got a lot to prove. He’s a young goalkeeper and we already have a young goalkeeper.
“Meslier’s done fantastically well but in my opinion, I would like someone more experienced for some stability behind him.
“Woodman has had a fantastic season, to be fair, and he is a really good young goalkeeper.
“But if you go into the season with two young goalkeepers, it is a risk.”
Woodman may only be 24-years-old – which means he’s still a baby in terms of goalkeepers – but the London-born ace still has plenty of match experience under his belt.
He played 95 times in all competitions during his two seasons on loan at Swansea, keeping a massive 34 clean sheets in the process.
He’s also had loan spells in the Scottish Premiership, where he played 19 times and kept seven clean sheets for both Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.
Woodman’s clean sheet record is really good and he also has experience of playing in top-flight football and Championship football in England.
We could do way worse than him.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have made an approach to sign this £6.4million central midfielder.
