'Nowhere near fit enough' – Exclusive: Pundit claims 'opportunity gone' for one Leeds player
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that he has real doubt over whether Jean-Kevin Augustin will sign for Leeds on a permanent deal and that the striker has blown an opportunity to prove himself.
Augustin has been limited to just 48 minutes of action spread over three cameo appearances since he arrived on loan.
He picked up a hamstring injury that kept him out of the last three games before the season was suspended and has now reportedly suffered a recurrence.
It’s yet to be confirmed but he looks highly unlikely to be involved on Sunday when Leeds play Cardiff and Robinson thinks the opportunity has gone for the striker to prove himself.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “Leeds fans wanted to see a match fit Augustin ready to play. Bamford has had to carry a lot of weight on his shoulders this year.
“You wanted to see Augustin give himself and Leeds fans the best opportunity so fans can see the best of him.
“He clearly was not match fit when he first came in and he has had a couple of loans that have been cancelled but he has got top pedigree.
“But he needs curtailing to fulfil that pedigree. Players have been able to keep themselves fully fit during lockdown. Everyone can go running or biking. Match fitness is being on the grass and replicating a game. A hamstring injury is running, not kicking a football and it is a recurrence of an injury. The minimum you would expect is the running.
“There has to be real doubt now over whether he will sign permanently. This was his opportunity. Leeds needed a player of that ilk and that calibre but he certainly was not ready when he came.
“On his substitute appearances, he looked nowhere near fit enough or sharp enough. If he is not fit between now and the end of the season it could be his opportunity gone.”
Leeds have managed without Augustin so far and should be able to get over the line without him.
Tyler Roberts is waiting in the wings and was on fire just before the season was suspended.
Leeds also have goals throughout the team.
However, there has to be real doubt now over the long-term future of Augustin at Leeds.
