We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that having Kalvin Phillips fit for the game on Saturday is a “massive boost” for Leeds as they start their Premier League campaign off against Liverpool at Anfield.

Philips missed the last three games of the Championship season with injury and his fitness for Saturday was claimed to be touch and go.

However, he travelled with England last week after getting his first call-up for his country and played 76 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Denmark.

Former England keeper Robinson also said that being with the England squad would improve Phillips as a player and as a person.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “His injury at the end of last season was worrying but it’s a massive boost for Leeds to have him fit for the Liverpool game.

“I said at the end of last year there was an England call-up for him on the horizon and it’s come. I think potentially he’ll be in that squad for the rest of the season if he can keep himself fit.

“It shows how far he’s come under Bielsa and, without a doubt, he’s the first name of the team sheet for Leeds.”

Talking of Phillips’ experience with the England squad, Robinson said, “You certainly realise the calibre of player you’re around and that it’s a step up from club football.

“The intensity won’t be different for Phillips, it’s hard to imagine anyone more intense than Bielsa in training, but the things the players are able to do… you’re training with the elite, the best in the country, and that will only develop Phillips as a player and as a person.”

Leeds fans will be expecting Phillips to take his usual defensive midfield role in a 4-1-4-1 formation on Saturday against Liverpool.

Marcelo Bielsa also confirmed that all his other players had returned fit and well from the international break.

Only Adam Forshaw is currently ruled out of the Liverpool game.
